Kernel troubleshooting
When the editor toolbar says Kernel failed · Retry, Nuclei shows the reason in a banner under the editor tabs. Each heading below matches one of those reasons. Retry stops any half-started kernel and starts a fresh one.
port-in-use
Section titled “port-in-use”The desktop kernel listens on 127.0.0.1:8742. Another program (often an old
Nuclei window or a stray python kernel/server.py) is already using it.
- Quit other Nuclei windows.
- Find the process:
lsof -i :8742on macOS/Linux,netstat -ano | findstr 8742on Windows. - Stop it, then click Retry.
script-missing
Section titled “script-missing”Nuclei could not find kernel/server.py next to the app. This usually means
a damaged or partial install. Reinstall from the
latest release. If you
run from source, start the app from the repository root.
python-missing
Section titled “python-missing”The kernel runs in a managed Python environment. If that environment could not
be created, Nuclei falls back to a system python3; if neither can start, you
see this message. Install Python 3.10 or newer, make sure python3 is on your
PATH, then click Retry. See Install and build.
auth-rejected
Section titled “auth-rejected”The kernel refused this session’s token. Restart Nuclei; a new token is generated on every launch.
not-responding
Section titled “not-responding”The kernel process started but never accepted a connection within 15 attempts (about 30 seconds). Check the Terminal panel for a Python traceback, then click Retry.
browser-load
Section titled “browser-load”The web build downloads Python (Pyodide, about 10 MB) from the jsDelivr CDN the first time you open it. This message means that download failed:
- Check your network connection.
- Disable content blockers or privacy extensions for
cdn.jsdelivr.net. - Click Retry. Nuclei restarts the Python worker from scratch.
The browser build keeps Python in a web worker, so a program that runs forever is stopped (the worker restarts) instead of freezing the page. While a run is in progress, the Run button becomes Stop: click it to end the program immediately. Python restarts in a few seconds (“Restarting Python…”), and the Terminal notes that the run was stopped. A program that runs for more than 120 seconds (5 seconds for the live preview while you type) is stopped the same way.
unknown
